The Concepts Behind IQ Power

Traditionally, intelligence was assumed to be entirely dependent on the brain, rather than the software that runs this organic neural computer. People would test intelligence by examining the applicant's ability to solve a range of problems on the assumption that either nobody knows these problems at a given age or that statistically everybody is unfamiliar with a certain percentage of the problems tested. Generation-X parents then responded by exposing their children to a wider range of problems when very young - further skewing test results! After all, being recognised as having "smart genes" is just as gratifying as being recognised as "highly intelligent"!

Due to the initial assumption that intelligence is entirely genetic in its determination, experts would try to explain away the fact that people got better at a given IQ test as they got older by pointing out the fact that older people generally have more experience with a wider range of problems. This is in spite of the fact that such admissions highlight a serious flaw in current testing systems. However, no-one wanted to admit that intelligence might be variable and depend to a great degree on the circumstances and perceived needs of life rather than on what genes you have. The fact is, that without an unflawed intelligence testing system, there is simply no way to know, because without an unflawed testing system, the test results are simply not repeatable.

A Different Perspective on Intelligence.

FieldCraft is in the business of software development. We are well aware that in terms of being "the next big thing";

However, nobody can produce artificial intelligence, even though nearly everyone wants it and a great many researchers around the globe seek this elusive digital elixir of life. FieldCraft has some conservative projects in this department, but recognises that you have to learn to crawl, before you can learn to walk, much less run or dance! Breakthroughs in theoretical perception at FieldCraft, have lead to a number of projects based on artificial perception that are nearing tool prototyping (this is the stage where tools are prototyped to build the major project components that are simply not practical to build manually). This has lead us to the specification of an even more ambitious project that may well create the first artificial intelligence in the next few years (assuming we are right - a real long shot considering how many others have incorrectly made that assumption in this field!).

Instead of approaching the puzzle of intelligence from the perspective of "how must intelligence be described in an academically acceptable manner", the approach at FieldCraft is one of "what method works?". We don't particularly care if anyone approves or not, and we don't have to win the respect of our peers. All that matters is whether the modules and finally, the prototype actually work - Who knows, only prototyping will tell! Experience in the research of artificial intelligence has taught us a number of things about intelligence from a designer's perspective:

Intellectual power is quantifiable. Contrary to materialistic assumptions made in past studies of intelligence, we assume that intellectual power is neither static, biological, nor genetically controlled. Readily repeatable tests, such as with this program, demonstrate clearly that intellectual power varies with time of day (degree of consciousness), with stage of life (ageing), and with perceived need for intelligence (psychological influences).

We readily admit that biological attributes such as sobriety, some forms of brain damage, and genetics may influence intellectual power to a degree. Once again, repeatable experiments may be used to demonstrate this point. However, neural pathways can and are always replaced and/or supplemented if the need to do so is perceived at a biological level. Thus, the degree to which we aspire in power of intelligence largely determines our upper limits of intellectual performance.

Thus the question of how intelligent you are may be irrelevant in the light of such questions as whether you aspire to, or perceive a need to be or become more intelligent...

IQ Power was originally developed to demonstrate a point in a discussion about intelligence on one of the newsgroups. It wound up becoming the most popular free download acquired as a result of visiting the FieldCraft website. The implied viability of this package was a surprise and it was placed on the project expansion queue. Requirements for more advanced logical models than Boolean algebra in the artificial perception projects placed IQ Power at the head of the project expansion queue once the new modules became available.
