Optimization Tools: Automated Descriptions & Keywords

Categories

More and more web indexers are looking for category information relevant to your web page. Web Sergeant offers the option to prompt you for a page category that is placed on the page in the category meta tag once you commit the changes. This is Web Sergeant's only meta tag feature that is not fully automated.

Descriptions

Description meta tags are often used by indexers to summarise the content on your web page for web surfers using the attached search engine. However, modern search engine descriptions can be generated by the search engine from the body content of the page.

What is the description used for? The web surfer sees your web site on a search engine's hit list, then reads the description before deciding whether or not to pay your site a visit.

Description meta tags can play a role in page ranking, although this is not a universal role. Web Sergeant uses an inverted statistical distribution algorithm to assemble a description that is less than one kilobyte in length and representative of the web page in question.

Keywords

Keywords are handy for those old clunky legacy search engines that do not analyse the body content of the page. In fact, there are a great many of those "old clunky legacy search engines" still in service, and they carry considerable traffic. The trick here is to keep the keyword content below one kilobyte and avoid all word repetitions because your page or site can be expelled from a search engine index over something as minor as a single keyword duplication, or for the presence of a keyword that does not actually appear in the body content. This discrepancy can not only hurt your site's ranking, but will also upset web surfers who come to a page on your site from a keyword search, only to find that the keyword does not show up on the web page! Web Sergeant automates the process of keyword selection by choosing the words that have the highest crib rank. This avoids cripplingly common words such as, "the", while emphasising the sorts of words that make your web page stand out.
